How to Choose a Transport Company in the North East: A Practical Guide

There's no shortage of transport companies claiming to operate in the North East. Sorting out which ones are actually reliable, properly insured, and capable of handling your specific requirements takes more than reading a website. This is a practical guide to the evaluation process — the questions to ask, the things to verify, and the red flags that should make you look elsewhere.
Start With: Do They Actually Operate Here?
Some transport companies list the North East as a service area but don't have vehicles based in the region. Their North East coverage means they'll send a vehicle from a depot in Leeds or Sheffield when needed. That's fine for planned freight with plenty of lead time. For same day or urgent collections, it means a collection window measured in hours rather than under the hour you'd get from a company actually based in Tyneside.
Ask directly: 'Where are your vehicles based, and how quickly could you have a van at my premises in [Newcastle/Gateshead/Sunderland] today?' The answer tells you a lot. For same day courier Newcastle or courier Gateshead, we're genuinely local.
Insurance — What You Actually Need Confirmed
Goods-in-transit insurance covers your freight if it's lost or damaged while in the transport company's care. Ask for the coverage limit per load, not just 'yes we have insurance.' A small courier company might have £10,000 GIT cover — fine for most parcels, not fine for a £50,000 piece of engineering equipment.
If you're sending goods to Europe, confirm that CMR insurance (international road haulage cover) applies. UK domestic GIT policies don't automatically extend to European journeys. View Bennison Transport insurance and fleet information for full details. We also recommend checking the Bennison Transport fleet to understand what we operate directly.
Test Their Responsiveness Before You Have an Urgent Need
The best time to discover that a transport company takes 45 minutes to answer the phone is not at 4pm when you have a critical collection that needs to happen in the next hour. Before you commit to a provider for anything important, call them at an unexpected time and see what happens. Do they answer? Do they have an answer to your question or do they need to 'call you back'? How the phone is handled tells you a lot about how operations are run.
References in Your Sector
A transport company that works regularly with North East manufacturers will have clients in manufacturing who can speak to their performance. Same for legal firms, healthcare providers, or retailers. Ask for a reference in your industry. The willingness to provide one is itself informative — companies that can't point to satisfied clients in your sector may not have many.
The Questions Worth Asking
• Where are your vehicles based and how quickly can you collect in [my area]?
• What's your operator licence number? (for HGV operators)
• What is your goods-in-transit insurance limit per load?
• Can you handle [your specific requirement] with your own fleet?
• Do you have references from businesses in [your industry]?
